Our Story

A Letter from Jimmy and Michael Thornberry

Welcome to Powell Valley Millwork! We appreciate you visiting our website and are eager to share our story with you.

Powell Valley Millwork is proud to be a leading manufacturer of Poplar and Radiata mouldings and millwork, supplying a diverse customer base across North America. Distributors, retail lumberyards, and architectural millwork firms rely on our quality craftsmanship and unparalleled customer service to meet their demand today and in the future.

Creating a moulding pattern or trim board is a dynamic blend of technology and finesse that few companies can repeat for volume programs. We are fortunate to have a dedicated staff with decades of experience in this industry and a commitment to serve.

Like any vendor within your supply chain, it’s important to partner with a company that understands your needs and is willing to adapt to a changing environment. Powell Valley Millwork is an agile manufacturing company that can create virtually any product using Poplar or Radiata substrates.

Throughout the production process, all byproducts are captured and used either for fuel in a wood-fired boiler that creates steam for the kilns, or sold as animal bedding in the equine industry. Powell Valley Millwork is proud to be a zero-waste company, with 100% of the wood fiber being consumed.

As a family, we have worked in this industry since the early 1990s and have enjoyed success partnering with the right consumers.  We invite you to take a look around and reach out anytime with questions. Whether you’re just passing through, or if you have a project we can help with, we’re glad to be able to share our story with you.

Sincerely,

Jimmy Thornberry

How We Operate

If It’s Poplar or Radiata, We Can Make It.

The hardwood species Poplar is uniquely abundant in our region of the Appalachian forest - so abundant that every piece of lumber we purchase comes to us fresh from sawmills within a 200 mile radius of our facilities. Poplar has long been admired and sought-after for its lasting beauty, durability and milling quality. Known as the painters’ wood, it dries easily and finishes smoothly, taking paint and stain exceptionally well.

The Radiata we process comes from our forests in Chile where we sustainably maintain nearly three million acres of plantation-grown fiber.  All of CMPC’s operation responds to the highest standards of forest management, ensuring a harmonious operation in the economic, social, and environmental fields.  The sustainable management of CMPC forestry crops is certified through FSC® and CERTFOR-PEFC to guarantee the protection of the native forest and biodiversity. It ensures that wood for industrial use is obtained exclusively from plantations of controlled origin and entirely traceable from its origin to its final destination.

We offer our clients complete customization when it comes to our Poplar and Radiata products. We’re able to provide full-service, in-house design solutions, drafting and tooling for our commercial and design clients so they can feel confident that they’ll have the best possible end product to offer.

Finger-Jointing Benefits.

We are the largest finger-joint (FJ) Poplar manufacturer in North America, with FJ Poplar and Radiata products at the core of our business. We’re unique in this way - others in the market use finger-jointing an ancillary business model to recuperate byproducts into sellable goods. Our facilities are set up to produce finger-joint products first to create the most sturdy and impeccable product from the start.

Unparalleled Expertise.

Powell Valley Millwork is known in the industry for our superior Poplar and Radiata products. We pride ourselves in understanding our customer’s needs and appreciate the value of On-Time Delivery. No matter what your project entails, we’ll find a way to ‘yes.’

A Well-Oiled Machine.

We’ve honed our manufacturing process down to a technologically-sound art. We take pride in every step of the manufacturing process, from the careful procurement and grading of incoming lumber, to digital scanning and cross-cutting to remove defects, to finger-jointing for ultimate durability - all the way to moulding and priming of our finished products.  We adhere to stringent quality control standards at every step, creating beautiful, sustainable, and durable products for every customer large and small.

Value Engineering.

Our expertise gives us the ability to ‘value engineer,’  meaning we’re uniquely positioned to massage your ideas and distill them into a budget-aligning proposition so that all your boxes are checked.

Sustainability Matters.

Being mindful about the responsible management of our forests is not just an environmental concern - it’s a wise business choice. We’re committed to producing absolutely no waste throughout our manufacturing process, using every byproduct for various purposes beyond our products. Not only that, for every tree we source for our lumber, 2.5 trees grow in its place, so our unique process makes our wood products about as renewable of a resource as you can get.
